Start the walk from the top end of the car park of Stocksbridge leaisure centre. Take the tarmac path that head off up the hill. After 200 yards the path moves out form the bushes to a clear view across the playing fields. There is a bench here if you need a rest already. Opposite the bench is a rock monument with a plaque detailing the origin of these playing fields.
Turn left off the path just after the bench and head off up hill across the grass toward to top corner of the playing fields.
Pass over the low stone style and follow the path along the edge of the field to the old wooden kissing gate. Keep heading up hill along the lane with the playing fields to your back.
When the lane joins the tarmac road turn left. Continue up the road until you reach the junction. Mucky lane heads off to the right onto the moor. In wet weather it will be obvious how mucky lane got its name. There is another bench at the start of mucky lane for you to catch you breath before the final ascent.
Make your way up mucky lane, watching out for interesting birds in the fields on either side. Pass through the wooded stile at the top of the lane. The path continues in the same direction, although you may need to meander to avoid the really wet bits!
When the stone wall on the left turn towards Hunger Hill the path to the Trig point heads off slightly to the right of the previous path. The path is well trodden and easy to see.
Climb up across the moor until you emerge onto a grassy area. The trig point is now visible a few hundred yards away.
Aim for the stone gateway just to the right of the track. From the gateway head across the field and up to the Trig Point. Sit back and take time to admire the wonderful views in all directions.
The return route continues from the Trig Point in the same direction as before. Continue on the high ground until you reach the start of woodland. The pass goes through a gateway. To the right of this gateway there is a narrow opening in the wall which you need to pass through. The path needed runs along on the North side of the wall.
You will be able to see a copse ahead and to the right. The path will eventually turn to descent through that area.
After following the wall for a few hundred yards you will be above the copse and you will come across a footpath direction post indicating a right hand turn down the hill.
Follow this path to the copse. The path can be difficult to locate in the copse in summer, but it runs down the left hand side of the copse. The path leaves the copse at the bottom left corner and heads over to the gate in the wall.
Cross the road and tack the unmade lane. This is the old coach road. Follow this lane down hill until you reach the next road.
Turn right onto the road and follow the road around various bends until you get to the farm. There is a footpath sign indication the path over a stone stile and into a triangular filed.
The path follows the wall by the left hand side of the field all the way to the top corner where the path goes over a high stone stile.
Turn left down the lane and then retrace your origin route through the kissing gate and down to the sports centre car park.
